C.E. "Big House" Gaines Hall of Fame
Elias Gilbert is inducted into the WSSU C.E. “Big House” Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame for his outstanding accomplishments in track and field. A three-time national champion and two-time NAIA All-American, Gilbert is one of the greatest track and field athletes to ever take to the track at WSSU. Gilbert captured the 1958 110-yard high hurdles (13.6), the 1959 120-yard high hurdles (14.6) and the 440-yard high hurdles (53.6) national championship during his illustrious career. Gilbert captured the Herbert B. Marrett Outstanding Performer award from the NAIA in both 1956 and 1958 as well.
