C.E. "Big House" Gaines Hall of Fame
George Foree, a 1961 graduate of Winston-Salem State University, was a dominant player on their championship basketball team for four years under the guidance of coach “Big House” Gaines. During the 1959-60 season, Foree was one of the top scorers to start the season. Alongside fellow Ram great Cleo Hill, their effort marked the first time in school history that the team won two consecutive championships. For his efforts on the court, Foree was named an NAIA Third Team All-American. In 1962, Foree was recognized as the Most Valuable player in the CIAA tournament. Foree coached basketball at High Point’s William Penn High School and led the 1968 team to the North Carolina High School Athletic Conference 4-A title. Foree also coached at Andrews High School. Foree was often remembered as “Coach” or “Big George.” Foree was inducted into the Guilford County Hall of Fame in 2007. He was an active member of the Carl Chavis Ys Men Club and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. George Foree passed away on March 21st, 2001. He is survived by daughter, Audra Foree, and stepson Cory G. Watson.
